THIS DOCUMENT HAS BEEN PREPARED TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ACT 1994

SCOPE

 

Big red cat owns and operates car & passenger ferries from the Southern Moreton Bay area; Cleveland to North Stradbroke Island, Dunwich.

The facility consists of car park ticket office and ramp and a separate refrigeration and dry storage facility.

B.R.C is committed to achieving a high standard of environmental management and performance within each business unit.  This policy represents a statement aimed at setting an appropriate framework of environmental objectives, targets and performance criteria.  Management and staff are responsible for the achievement of the goals set out in this policy.

·         Comply with legislative and regulatory requirements;

·         Monitor environmental performance by the identification, evaluation and effective control of environmental risks associated with B.R.C operations, and the implementation of an effective environmental management system;

·         Implement programs which strive to conserve resources and minimize waste;

·         Communicate policy to all personnel

·         Appropriately liaise with the community on environmental issues and make this environmental policy publicly available to interested parties on request

·         Establish and maintain proper lines of reporting on environmental performance; and conduct periodical reviews of this environmental policy for effectiveness and amend as necessary.


 

 

 

RISK ASSESSMENT

 

Steps taken to identify and reduce risks:

·         Where possible eliminate chemical cleaners and replaced them with biodegradable products.

·         Any products that are suitable for recycling are identified and bins are provided.

·         Special fittings to engines and gear boxes allow oils to be pumped directly into waste oil drums.

·          Mobile pumps for cleaning bilges are utilized to pump waste oil straight into waste oil drums onboard.

·         Bins provided for old oil filters.

·         On board bunded area contains engine oil, gearbox oil, and hydraulic steering fluid, waste oil and oily water drums for removal by Nationwide.

·         Pumps and containers designed to remove coolant from engines for re-use.

·         Spill kits located around board and on site at Toondah harbour.

·         Fire resistant paint locker provided.

·         Maintaining a high level of house cleaning standards in the engine rooms of our vessel is paramount to minimizing the risk of onboard pollutants entering the waterways and minimizing fire risks.

·         After any spill, service or repair is carried out the engine room is degreased and pumped ashore for storage and collection.

·         All rubbish generated on board from passenger and vehicle cartage is retained on board until it can be off-loaded ashore for disposal.

·         Sewage is managed and stored on board in grade (A) installation capable of delivering best outcome for the environment  (Moreton Bay)

Paints / Products

All paints and thinners are located in a vented fire resistant paint locker.  No paints are to be mixed on the vessel.  After having read the appropriate MSDS for the product, it should be prepared in the paint shed wearing appropriate PPE and a spill kit on hand.  Care should be taken when painting that any spills on the board are cleaned up immediately and materials place in bins provided.  If winds are strong, painting should be halted until more favorable conditions arise.  Any left-over paints, paint tins or cleaning agents shall be disposed of according to their MSDS.  After all work is completed or at the end of each day no paint or paint materials are to be left on board and should be returned to the paint locker on shore. The, Master and Operations Manager should inspect the vessel for any left-over debris,

DRY STORAGE CONTINER

B.R.C. also has a dry facility on the Cleveland side if it s operation to store minor products and spares to service  plant and equipment used onboard the vessel Sea Breeze Cleveland  base of operations.  Any major engine rebuilds are carried out off-site.

The Dry Storage container contains the following equipment:

·         Engine oils

·         Hydraulic Oils

·         Injector lines

·         Engine filters

·         General engine parts

·         Paints locker/paint solvents

·         Cleaning products are also stored in workshop in 20 litre quantities for decanting into smaller, properly labeled containers for vessel use.

·         Fire resistant paint locker

 

 

 

WORK PROCEDURES

 

Safety glasses and hearing protections signs, fire extinguishers and a first aid station are located on board.

B.R.C encourages a high level of house cleaning standards on board and in the dry storage facility.  Any spill must be cleaned up immediately.  To minimize the risk of spills any parts that may contain oil or coolant are drained before removal from the vessel utilizing the equipment provided.  All parts, rags and cleaning agents must be transferred between the dry storage facility and vessel in one or more of the trolleys provided for this purpose and operating safely.
